5 THINGS TO DO LESS OF IN 2020

Updated: Jun 29, 2020

When a new year begins, we start to think of all of these new things we need to do. But what if instead of doing more, we do less?

For 2020, my goals are to do less. And although I already know I am failing at most of these, I am going to give it my best to be aware and continue making changes in my life. This means trying new things in new ways. Learning to become a better version of myself, and finding ways to sustain these changes. So try these out and let me know what you can do less of!

EAT LESS MEAT AND ADD MORE VEGETARIAN OPTIONS
WHY IT MATTERS
  • Eating a plant based diet reduces your carbon footprint.

  • The production of meat products emits an intense amount of greenhouse gases.

  • Farming of animals takes a huge amount of the world's water.

"A chicken breast takes over 542 liters of water to produce."

FLY LESS
WHY IT MATTERS

"An economy flight from London to New York emits an estimated 0.67 tonnes of CO2 per passenger."

  • These emissions will affect the temperature of our earth which can cause irregular weather patterns and draughts.

  • Each flight leads to carbon emissions which leads to arctic ice lost. Arctic ice lost leads to rising sea levels, loss of animal populations, loss of humans and their homes.

SHOP RECYCLED FASHION
WHY IT MATTERS
  • The textile industry is one of the greatest polluters of local freshwater.

  • Polyester - found in almost 60% of clothing items is created with the burning and mixing of petroleum, coal, air and water.

  • The production of clothing is usually done in countries where labor is cheaper - even if they don't have the materials needed. This can cause pollution in communities that may not have the means to defend themselves, as well as emissions from the transportation needed to receive materials.

"22 billion new clothing items are bought by Americans per year, with only 2% of those clothes being domestically manufactured."

  • Fast fashion is creating a high demand and high disposal of clothes.

Perfect example: vintage Coco Channel is still in style.
DRIVE LESS AND USE PUBLIC TRANSIT MORE OFTEN
WHY IT MATTERS
  • Driving causes air pollution.

  • Air pollution causes smog, ozone depletion, global warming, and acid rain.

  • Acid rain makes water more acidic and in turn can be toxic.

"Public transportation...helps reduce energy consumption, greenhouse gases and other pollutants."

USE LESS SINGLE USE COFFEE CUPS
WHY IT MATTERS
  • Not all plastic packaging is recyclable, including most single use coffee cups.

  • Single use coffee cups are a leader in this waste race. In the UK as much as 7 million cups are tossed a day or 2.5 billion each year.

  • When looking for coffee consider bringing your own mug, have coffee at the shop, or purchase your own beans to grind up yourself. cups are also not recyclable. You can also have some fun by purchasing your own coffee beans and grinding them yourself.
